RV Life-On The Road Again

We've been trying to take a trip each month since we bought our motorhome last August, but so far we always end up doing it every other month instead.  We had a trip planned for the last weekend of December (AFTER all the craziness of Christmas, we couldn't possibly have fit one in BEFORE Christmas) but then we needed to cancel to be able to do Christmas with my family that weekend.  

My hubby took a week off for January--but he had a lot of things he wanted to do around the house.  So Monday thru Wednesday he did stuff he wanted around the house.  It was a normal week for me, house cleaning, laundry, homeschooling our son, & then on Thursday after homeschool was over we went to the zoo (Lil J & I go to the zoo at least once a month & he's been wanting to show daddy the zoo, he was sooo excited--except it started to rain & the train had to be shut down--he was soooo upset about not going on the train with daddy.  But they actually came looking for us, found us in the gift shop, & gave us free passes to ride the train next time we are there).  On Friday hubby joined me & Lil J for J's swimming lesson.  And later on Friday we took off for a weekend trip in our motorhome.  

I am proud to say that I packed the motorhome super fast this time around.  The first trip it took me a really long time to pack--trying to figure out what we would & wouldn't need.  And I had NEVER packed food before!!  The second trip was a weekend trip, rather than a whole week, like the first one, so it took me less time to pack, but it was still a pretty lengthy process.  But this time around it was super fast.  I was really pleased & proud of myself.  

We left on Friday & came home on Sunday.  We went to Calico Ghost town in Yermo, CA.  I had been there when I was young, with my family.  I remember liking it, but really couldn't remember much.  There were certain things I saw that I did actually remember, I was very surprised.  There was a building (house?) made out of glass bottles--I somehow didn't take a pic of it, but I remember it REALLY well for some reason.  And there was a mining tunnel that once we got inside I remembered really well.

For some reason we had a lot of "issues" on this trip, which is something we haven't experienced yet before, but God still watched over us & we still had a lot of fun.

We are not allowed to keep our motorhome where we live, our HOA doesn't allow it, so we have it in a storage facility.  Upon picking it up we realized we had had a mouse visiting while it was in storage.  Thankfully we had just had it home for Christmas time & there was no evidence of that then, so we know it hadn't been there very long & it didn't appear to do any damage, aside from building a nest with our toilet paper!  We set a trap & never caught anything, so I think it had already moved on prior to us picking up the motorhome from storage.  Unfortunately this meant we had to wash all our dishes....just to be safe.  From what I hear it's a common problem when keeping RVs in storage facilities, we will have to do more to deter them in the future.  A friend of our's used to store her trailer in the same storage facility & she told me they had never had an issue there, so we had mistakenly thought it wasn't going to be an issue.  She had said it's more of an issue when you store it parked on dirt rather than pavement.

When we took our first trip, back in September, we hadn't realized how long it would take for the fridge to cool to the proper temperature & we didn't allow enough time for it to be completely cooled before taking off.  I really should've asked my mother, I don't know why I didn't think to do so ahead of time, since she had packed up our motorhome countless times when I was a kid.  

In November my hubby planned the trip very last minute (& then didn't actually turn the fridge on when he thought he was doing so) that we again didn't get it properly cooled prior to leaving.  I had put my foot down & requested no more last minute stuff or stuff where we don't get the fridge cooled completely before packing our food & leaving.  I had asked hubby to bring it home on Tuesday or Wednesday this time, but he didn't until Thursday.  On Thursday night he was trying to turn on the fridge & it absolutely wouldn't turn on.  The next morning he called a service center about it but they said they didn't have time to look at it.  We had planned to just take our food in the ice chest & then we would plug into electric hook up at the camp site & it would cool there.  But then my hubby goes back out on Friday & tries it again & voila, it turned on!!  Of course it wasn't enough time for it to be fully cooled by the time we departed, yet again.

We were surprised to see water damage in the wall of the kitchen--that wasn't there before.  And when hubby closed a cabinet (with a mirror in the door) the mirror cracked.  And a piece of trim behind a seat came off, out of nowhere, for no reason.  

And then when hubby hooked up the water at the camp site it caused water leaks in the kitchen faucet & behind the toilet!!  It really felt like everything was going wrong at this point, but we handled each issue as it came.  We ended up unhooking from the water there & using what we had in our freshwater tank.  That seemed to slow down the leaks.  Hubby was chatting with our camp neighbor (from Oregon) & he said we needed a water pressure regulator valve when we hook up to protect our motorhome.  We ended up realizing we had one, we just didn't know what it was.  We have sooooo much to learn!!!  (& we still need to buy a surge protector also!)  On our first trip, back in September, we noticed that the heater was kinda noisy, but it worked well aside from the noise.  It was the same on our trip in November.  But on Saturday night it quit working completely.  It had been getting noisier & noisier & we had said when we get home we need to have it looked at it......and then it wouldn't work anymore, at least not without making tons of noise like it was going to blow up.  Not to mention no one was going to get any sleep with all that noise going on.  We shut it down & our neighbor from Oregon came to our rescue & loaned us an electric heater to use for the night.  It was VERY cold in Yermo, even in the daytime, I don't think we would've made it there during the night without heat.  We will definitely make sure we have an electric heater stored away in case of future emergency (granting that we have electric hookups!).  

But despite all the challenges we had a really nice time.

There was lots of old stuff.  Fascinating stuff.  I have seen VERY old typewriters before, but none that looked like THIS!!

This has got to be the cutest doll house I have ever seen--totally carved out of wood--if I had a daughter I would be buying it for her for sure!!

The guy with these horses called us over to show us the horses & tell us about the horse back ride they offer--but Lil J wasn't old enough to go on the ride.  Lil J was really nervous about being so close to the horse at first, but given enough time he came around & started petting it on his own--he's so much like me in that regard.  'don't push me, just let me get comfortable at my own pace'

Of COURSE we had to ride on the mining train.  When we got to it they were out to lunch.  While waiting we went on a mine tour (1000 foot tunnel I believe it was), which was really cool.  It was a package deal that included the mining tunnel, panning for gold, & the mystery shack.  We did the mining tunnel & then the train & then panning for gold & then the mystery shack.  Somehow I didn't get pics of any of those things though, aside from the train.  (I got really sick in the mystery shack though & had to exit early there & I don't think I took ANY pics after that)  While the 1000 foot tunnel was really cool (& I remembered it well from my childhood--major flashbacks!!) the panning for gold wasn't worth paying for in my opinion, especially in the freezing cold water.  And the mystery shack would've been cool, if I hadn't gotten sick.  Be warned!  I do not remember this mystery shack from my childhood for some reason.

In the top 2 pics: Lil J was REALLY proud of himself for climbing this hill all by himself!  On our hike we found several small caves (probably leftovers from mining tunnels), the bottom pics here were Lil J exploring one of those caves.

My hubby didn't care much for the cemetery & didn't understand why I wanted to see it.  To me it's just as much history as the rest of the ghost town is.  There was a lot of interesting head stones, etc in here.  And I was surprised to see some deaths as recent as 2005 & 2008 in here.  And there was a 2 year old that lived 1895-1897 & it had fresh flowers on the grave.  I really wondered who was still visiting that grave.  

Back home at last, learning how to drive the motorhome!

Can't wait to see where we go on our next adventure!!  Although we have some repairs that need to get done first, so it might take us a little while before we get to go again.

New Year's Resolutions, etc.......

I've been MIA for a little bit......allow me to explain.........

I haven't blogged since last year.  I've never been big on New Year's resolutions, but the past few years I've been making some.  I've always been annoyed by New Year's Resolutions because people always get so serious about them & pledge to do all sorts of stuff & usually before the end of January they've completely given up.  I've never wanted to be one of those people, however, being a perfectionist, I usually do pretty good at them, even when I say "I may not do it, but I'm gonna give it a try" or something along those lines.

Resolution #1: I am planning to read my Bible in a year.

My church does this each year together as a congregation.  I did it 2 years ago I think.  I don't know that I could commit to this every single year.  I'd like to do other types of daily Bible studies sometimes, so I'm thinking doing this one every other year might just be the ticket, allowing me to do other Bible studies on the alternating years.  Or, perhaps, as my child matures I'll be able to have more time in the Word & will be able to do both.  Anyways, I am only 13 days into this, but I am doing very well.  Most days I'm up at 4 am & I workout, shower, spend time with God, & then sometimes have a little free time until my son is up--which is usually around 6:30-7am-ish.  There have been a couple of days where I didn't get it read before my son got up & I just told him I needed to read my Bible & he allowed me to do so.   I was very proud of him!!

My church always offers a "book of the month" & every December they offer the "One Year Bible" as the book of the month.  I prefer to do the reading out of my own study Bible, so I headed to a Christian bookstore & got myself a schedule for reading the Bible in a year (it was a pamphlet & it came with 3 or 4 different schedules for reading it in a year--I'm following the one that my church does--a little Old Testament, a little New Testament, a little Psalms, & a little Proverbs each day).  [On a sidenote, one of the years at my church they decided to do the Chronological reading of the Bible in a year; my pastor said it was SOOO hard  & he would probably never do that again, LOL]

When I did this two years ago I did it in the YouVersion app on my phone.  But I REALLY don't like e-books.  Especially the Bible, I really want to read this out of my own study Bible.

However, my hubby decided he wanted to read his Bible in a year also (neither of discussed this with each other, we both just decided to do it on our own & then were excited to find that the other was going to do it also)  I showed him my schedule but he wasn't really liking that.  He tried to do it from the YouVersion app, but was disappointed that they don't offer it in NKJV.  So he ended up buying the 1 year Bible from our church--it's interesting, I never thought about it, but it's set up where you don't have to flip all over the place each day.  I told him everyone is different & if he likes it that's all that matters--but I still prefer my study Bible, LOL.  

I have to say while I enjoy reading my Bible each day, even more I enjoy being able to discuss it with my hubby, because he's reading it also!!

Resolution #2: to get back in shape.

Sometime late in 2012 I stopped working out regularly.  This coming after like 21 years of consistently working out--pretty shocking, I know.  I was really struggling health wise, from a lot of different angles.  I felt like my body needed a break to be able to heal.  There were several times that I tried to get back on the fitness horse, but each time it seemed like my health would start back pedaling.  I'm determined to succeed this time & so far I'm doing ok--aside from some anemia (it would seem that the damage gluten has done to my intestines is pretty severe & may never heal at this point).  I am doing Suzanne Bowen's Barre Amped & Leah Sarago's Ballet Body so far, though if I find myself bored that will change.  I really do love these workouts though.  They are both slightly different & I feel like I couldn't choose one over the other.  (I also have some that both Leah & Suzanne did together)

I do also want to lose some weight--5-10 lbs or so.  But I'm not gonna make that part of my resolution.  I'm just gonna focus on tightening & toning & building muscle for now.  I am hoping some weight loss will come along with it, but it's not gonna be my focus. 

Resolution #3: To spend less time on the internet.

I honestly don't do much on the internet--I basically just check email & instagram & blog on occasion.  I do enjoy Instagram a lot & I never have an issue keeping up on there.  Pretty much the only contact I have with Facebook these days is what I get in my email--which is mostly just posts on groups that I'm in.  Oh yeah, I do try to keep up with a couple of blogs on my blog reader app, although I do fall behind frequently & sometimes can never get caught up & just mark everything as read & start all over again LOL.  

Anyways, we did start back homeschooling on December 30th.  My hubby works A LOT & didn't get New Year Eve's or New Year's Day off, so it didn't feel much like a holiday & I didn't take a school break for it.  For now I'm enjoying not feeling pressured to document everything we do in school for the blog.  I'm sure at some point I'll resume blogging, though probably not every single week--maybe I'll do a monthly blog on it??  I don't know, I'll see how it goes.  

Occasionally, usually late at night if I can't sleep or on the weekends when my son is playing with daddy & I actually have free time, I do pop in briefly on the internet--usually Facebook.  

I do hope to continue the RV blogs, however, & we are hoping to take another trip soon.  I am dreaming of a week long trip to Wisconsin (well, we calculated it out & it would be 3 [long] days of driving there, one day there, & 3 more [long] days driving home.  And I'm dreaming of a week long trip to Sequoia.  We went there a lot when I was a kid & of all the places we went it was by far my favorite.  I've always dreamed of being able to return there someday.  And I've always wanted my hubby to be able to go there & now I REALLY want my son to be able to see it also.  But I don't actually know when those trips may be possible, especially the Wisconsin trip, as I really want more than 1 day to spend there.

Homeschool Preschool--Unit 17--The Time of the Kings

I am using Heart of Dakota's Little Hands to Heaven curriculum, Bob books emerging reader books, various forms of Spanish, & reading aloud, usually from the chapter books &/or the Bible for my 4 year old son.

This week focuses on the letter N, & the kings Joash, Hezekiah, Josiah, & Job.

We started off Monday with a new fingerplay. We read in the Bible about Joash.  Lil J practiced writing "N" & "n".  He did 'count on me', drawing pillars in each box & counting each box & then all pillars.  He read a Bob book.  We did Spanish & then we colored a coloring sheet about Joash.  Then we did our songs--a song about Israel & our usual 3.  Later there will be reading aloud, from Christmas books & also from the Bible.

On Tuesday we continued with our fingerplay.  We read about & discussed Hezekiah.  Lil J did "hide & seek N".  He read a Bob book.  We did Spanish & our songs--a song about Israel turning back to God & our usual 3.  Later I will read aloud from Christmas books as well as the Bible at bedtime.  

On Wednesday we continued with our fingerplay.  We read about Josiah in the Bible.  He read a Bob book.  We did both devotionals for the letter N.  On a piece of paper I demonstrated what he needed to do--eyes, Bible, & smiley face--representing Josiah's eyes, the Bible, & Josiah's smile.  It was masking tape "N" day, which my son loves--he had his monster trucks drive on the N today. We did Spanish & colored a picture of Josiah & did our songs--a song about Israel turning back to God & then our usual 3 songs.  Later I will read aloud from our Christmas books & also from Luke in the Bible at bedtime.

On Thursday we finished off the week with our fingerplay, combining days 4 & 5.  We read about God's people turning away from God, marrying women who didn't believe in God.  And we read about Job.  We did a lot of discussing of what we read, there were a couple of activities that I skipped here.  He painted the letter "N" & wrote "N" & "n".  He read a Bob book, did Spanish, & did our songs--a song about Israel turning away from God & our usual 3 songs.

Next week we are breaking for Christmas & will then resume the following week learning about Isaiah & Jeremiah & the letter O.

Homeschool Preschool--Unit 16--Elijah and Elisha

I am using Heart of Dakota's Little Hands to Heaven, Bob books emerging reader books, various forms of Spanish, & reading aloud, usally from a chapter book, for my 4 year old son.

This week focuses on Elijah, Elisha, and the letter M.

On Monday we started off the week with a new fingerplay.  We read about Elijah in the Bible.  He read a Bob book.  He wrote M & m (& he wanted to N & n also).  He did 'count on me', drawing birds in each box (birds representing the ravens that fed Elijah).  We did Spanish & our songs--a song about Elijah & our usual 3.  This is still an area where I can't really find crafts that correlate, so I found a coloring sheet that went with today's Bible reading & he colored that.  I don't really mind though because I've been super busy with holiday stuff & finding crafts & doing all the prep work that goes along with extra crafts would be a bit much right now.  He's never really been into coloring, so I joined him on this one to help make it more exciting for him.  Later I will read aloud & I will for sure be reading aloud at bedtime from the book of Luke.  I have to say I really love reading to him at bedtime.  I think I will continue reading to him from the Bible at bedtime even when Christmas passes.  He is so calm & he really is listening, as he comments on certain things.

On Tuesday we continued with our fingerplay, we read in the Bible about God sending down fire for the sacrifice, Elijah being taken to heaven on a chariot of fire, & about the widow with the never-ending oil supply.  I combined days 2 & 3, to make for a 4 day school week.  We did a lot of discussing of what we read, we did masking tape "M" & a "bean M".  I left out a couple of things, but added on a worksheet.  He did Spanish & read a Bob book.  And we did music--a song about Elijah & our usual 3.  Later I will read aloud, probably from Christmas books, which I did yesterday, & then reading from Luke at bedtime.

Yesterday I sat down & went through the remainder of the school year (we are about half way through or close to it I guess, it's a 33 week curriculum) & pulled up coloring sheets to go with each week & printed out the "count on me" pages, the "hide & seek" pages, & "color" pages that are coming later on.  I organized them all by unit & day & put them in a folder.  It feels like such a weight off, knowing that it is all done & planned & I can truly just grab & go for the remainder of the school year.  I am also feeling burned out on crafts, but I think that may pass after some time off from it, & especially now that all the rest of the planning & organizing is completely done.  It now leaves me time to possibly find a craft & do all the planning & prep work involved.  But even if I don't return to doing crafts I still have lots of coloring sheets that I printed off the internet, to go along with what we are learning.  I am wondering if I should make sure I buy next year's curriculum early enough for me to do all of this before we begin, but I don't know that next year's will need this.  It looks like A LOT, so I don't think I'll be needing to add on extra stuff.  And printing pages out won't take all that long, if that is all that's needed.  

On Wednesday we continued with our fingerplay, we read about Elisha telling the leper to wash in the river 7 times to be healed.  He did 'Hide & Seek M'.  We did a drawing activity where I demonstrated & Lil J copied my demonstration on his paper.  There's been activities similar to this before & from what I recall they never made much sense to me, but this one I actually understood.  We were to draw red circles at the top of the paper--these represented the lepers sores.  Then we drew a river in the middle of the paper--this represented the river he washed himself in 7 times.  Then we drew a happy face at the bottom--this represented that the man was happy once he was healed.  Of course my silly son had to draw a happy face AND a serious face--because he might not have been happy ALL THE TIME he says.  Then he read a Bob book, & then we did Spanish.  And then we did our songs--no song to go with today's lesson, so just our usual 3--books of the Bible, God made the universe, & 10 commandments.  Later I will read aloud from Christmas books & at bedtime from the Bible.  

On Thursday we finished off the 4 day week with our fingerplay.  We read in the Bible about angels watching over Elisha.  We did our devotionals--I'm still using both--I really like ABC Bible Verses, but my son really enjoys the illustrations in Big Thoughts For Little People, so I include it also.  He wrote "M" & "m".  We read some scriptures in the Bible about angels & discussed the fact that we are not to worship angels, but only God.  He read a Bob book, we did some Spanish, & we did our songs.  There was no song for today's lesson, so we just did our usual 3--books of the Bible, God made the universe, & 10 commandments.  Later I will read aloud, probably from Christmas books, & then from Luke in the Bible at bedtime.  And that's a wrap for this week!

Homeschool Preschool--Unit 15--King Solomon

I am using Heart of Dakota's Little Hands to Heaven, Bob books emerging reader books, various forms of Spanish, & reading aloud, usually from a chapter book, for my 4 year old son.

This week is a review week, focusing on letters A-L & on Solomon.

After taking a week off to focus on Thanksgiving, I must say I was quite eager to get back to our regular schooling.  My son seemed to feel the same way.  I had worried that time away might lead to him being more lazy about it or not wanting to do it, but that didn't seem to be the case at all I am pleased to report.

On Monday we started off the week with a new fingerplay.  I decided to read the Bible reading from both my own NKJV Bible as well as from Lil J's own Bible that came with the curriculum & I will continue to do so from now on.  This curriculum is written to be used with any Bible--it lists the Bible reading in a standard Bible as well as the 2 Bibles they offer with the curriculum (they offer 2 to allow you to choose which one best fits your child's age & abilities).  So I read out of my Bible & then out of Lil J's Bible.  Then there was a "math activity" where I had a pile of pairs of shoes & Lil J had to sort the pairs & put them together & tell me which was largest & which was smallest, etc. & also which pair of shoes belonged to who in our family.  I don't really see that as being math per se, but it still seemed like a good learning activity so I did include it.  The point of it was that Solomon was wise & knew how to match the baby with it's own birth mother (what we read about in the Bible today).  Being a review week, I had Lil J write all the review letters, A-L.  And then I had him write his numbers as well.  Then we did an activity where we draw a blue cloud at the top of the page, a red smiley face in the middle, & a yellow rectangle at the bottom, representing the temple Solomon built.  The cloud represented Solomon's dream, where God came to him in a dream.  Then Lil J read a Bob book, then we did Spanish, our songs (a song about Solomon, a song about Proverbs, & our usual 3), & then he colored a print out page about Solomon.  I seem to have reached an area in the Bible where it's really tough to find crafts to go along with it.  So I was able to find this coloring page on Solomon & I settled for that as an add on activity.  Later I will read aloud.  The reading of Little House in the Big Woods has been put on hold for now....I've been doing a lot of library books instead.  And since it's December now, I've started my tradition of reading a chapter of Luke each day, beginning on December 1st & I've been reading it aloud to my son this year.

On Tuesday we continued with our fingerplay.  I chose this day to combine days 2 & 3 together to make a 4 day school week.  Yesterday seemed too busy to do so, so each week I will look for the lighter days to combine together.  We read about Solomon building the temple, we did a lot of discussing about what we read.  Being a review week I let Lil J choose what letter he wanted to decorate on paper (he chose A & chose to decorate with "o"s) & what letter he wanted as masking tape letter on the floor (he chose B).  Then he read a Bob book, we did Spanish, & our songs--a song about Solomon, a song about the temple, & our usual 3 songs.  All in all it was a very good day & I look forward to having Friday off!  There was an activity I skipped, building a temple out of food--it's in our curriculum & I had also found it when searching online for craft ideas.  I just have such a hard time with wasting that much food to do that.  I'm sure that's probably silly of me, but I just couldn't bring myself to do it.  I will read aloud later on today.

On Thursday we finished off the week with our fingerplay, we read about Solomon turning away from God, we did some acting out & discussing of what we read in the Bible.  Being review week he again wrote letters A-L & I had him write his numbers as well.  He read a Bob book, then we did Spanish, & songs--a song about Solomon, a song about Proverbs, & our usual 3 songs.  Later I will read aloud from something, as well as from Luke in the Bible, as the Christmas season is upon us.  I've been reading from Luke right before Lil J goes to bed & I love it.  He's so calm & still & it's so nice.  Anytime I read to him during the daytime he's running & wiggling or swinging on his swing, etc.  If I question him I find that he is listening, it's just distracting to ME when I'm reading & he's all over the place.  

Next week we will be covering Elijah and Elisha.............

RV Life

My hubby's job doesn't allow for much time off.  The most he can take off at a time is one week & he can only do that 2 or 3 times a year I believe.  And when he does do that it takes him close to a month to get caught up again when he goes back to work.  So we mostly plan to take lots of weekend trips in our motorhome.  Our goal is to do so once a month.  And that means we have to stay fairly close to home.  We didn't manage to go anywhere in October (early September was our week long trip we took right after buying the motorhome in late August).  But we did head south to the San Diego area for our November trip.  We stayed at "Chula Vista RV Park".  It was nice & I would recommend it, BUT someone we spoke with there said there was another RV Park in the area that had lots of fun stuff for kids, so if we do go back to San Diego again I think I'd rather stay where there's fun stuff for my son.  This place was nice, but geared more for senior citizens it seemed.  It was a little like the place we stayed at in Las Vegas--where some of the people were living in there long term & lots of people in there knew each other & played bingo there, etc. I guess this sort of thing is pretty common, it's just not something I ever recall seeing when I was a kid travelling in our motorhome.  

This was our campsite, if it's called "campsite".....I'm not really sure what to call it, but it had a picnic table to the rear of the motorhome, overlooking the bay.  {My hubby originally had planned to stay Friday night & head home on Saturday.....but I really wanted to stay Saturday night & head home on Sunday.  Our original reservations were for Friday night only.  On Saturday morning we asked about staying an additional night.  They were able to accomodate us, but had to move us.  So first we stayed here, right on the bay.  Then we moved to a site overlooking the marina.  It was actually nice to have had both views.  And the site overlooking the marina just seemed more roomy to me.  But somehow I forgot to take pics of the second site.}

It had been raining for a couple of days prior to our trip & while this day was gorgeous there were still some dark clouds looming in the distance

My son was excited to see this cat sunning itself on the dash of a neighboring motorhome (later we saw a second cat doing the same--I don't recall ever seeing people travel with cats in a motorhome!)

And of course he wanted to climb this tree in our "camp site" (this was the marina camp site)

All in all it was a very nice weekend away.  We look forward to more trips like this as well as more longer trips.  My hubby says he is definitely addicted to RVing & I have been since I was a kid.  Lil J sure does love it as well, he was so sad when we went back home & returned the motorhome to the storage facility.
